Past Future Continuous
Synopsis
Maryam fled Iran at the age of twenty, wrapped in a sheepskin, hidden among a flock crossing the mountainous border between Iran and Turkey. The revolution had just triumphed, and her activist friends had been imprisoned or executed. Her family decided to save her at any cost. She left Iran — never to return.
With the help of her friends, Maryam installs surveillance cameras throughout her parents’ house. From her new home in the United States, she can thus watch her past unfold on a screen. A fragile solution, because every time the connection in Iran drops, the images disappear. Past and present merge and blur.
A poetic and moving story of exile, memory, and the hidden bonds with places we can no longer return to — places we can only revisit through dreams, technology, and nostalgia.
