Mama Mercy
Synopsis
Mama Mercy lives in a squatted building in Rome alongside hundreds of families from various countries, all grappling with complex lives and fragile hopes. A mother of many children with an often-absent husband, she dreams of having an extra room so her children can grow up with greater dignity. One day, while tasked with distributing meal vouchers to the families in the building, Mama Mercy gives in to temptation and cashes them in, hoping to make her dream a reality. However, she is robbed on her way back, and the theft puts her family in jeopardy. Thus begins a desperate race to recover the money—navigating a city of both the wealthy and the destitute—until she meets Nicola, a Sardinian thief who offers her an unexpected chance at salvation. Solidarity among the downtrodden becomes the force that redeems difficult lives, as the future rests in the hands of women and children fighting every day for a better life.

Director’s vision
Motherhood is the element that sparks the action. The classic sacred iconography of the mother is overturned and reinterpreted within a contemporary context that is multicultural, vital, and situated on the margins. A new world emerges in history, composed of women and children repopulating old, abandoned buildings in Rome. These women hail from various parts of the Global South; they strive to navigate complex lives while carrying the trauma of their Mediterranean crossing. New philosophies emerge from attempts to find meaning in everyday events. The past resurfaces in the present, and a form of universal balance governs good and evil. New laws regulate relationships. Poverty and need lead to rule-breaking. Such infractions trigger sanctions from the new enforcers of the rules. Salvation arrives through the unexpected entry of a different kind of marginal subjectivity. The sanction leads to contrition and resolution. Alessandra Cutolo
